PUBNUB REAL-TIME API SUPERHERO COMIC
A custom superhero comic created for PubNub, turning the challenges of real-time app development into an entertaining illustrated adventure. Developed collaboratively from the client's original storyline, the comic uses humour, superheroes and a mischievous villain to introduce PubNub's technology to developers without the traditional sales pitch.

The Client's Objective
PubNub provides the technology that enables developers to add real-time features to applications, including messaging, chat, live updates and interactive experiences. Rather than building and maintaining the underlying infrastructure themselves, development teams can integrate PubNub's APIs and SDKs into their applications, allowing them to concentrate on creating features for their users.
The company wanted to introduce its platform to more developers and technical decision-makers, but it faced a particular marketing challenge: developers are not always receptive to conventional sales messaging.
PubNub's goal was to communicate what its technology could do in a way that felt entertaining, approachable and genuinely worth reading. The brief was clear: create a story that would appeal to developers and non-developers alike, without sounding overly promotional or sales-driven.
The team recognised that many people within its target audience were already comic book enthusiasts. A custom superhero comic offered an opportunity to connect with those interests while communicating the practical value of the platform.
Rather than creating another technical brochure, PubNub wanted to tell a story.
The Communication Challenge: Reaching Developers Without the Hard Sell
Developer marketing requires a different approach from traditional consumer advertising. Developers typically want to understand how technology works, whether it solves a genuine problem and how difficult it will be to implement.
For PubNub, the challenge was explaining a platform that operates largely behind the scenes. Real-time communication infrastructure is essential to many interactive applications, but its value is not always obvious to someone using the finished product.
An app might need live chat, location sharing, collaborative features or other real-time functionality. Building those capabilities independently can introduce additional development work, while changes in requirements may create unexpected problems.
PubNub wanted to show how its platform could help development teams add those features without having to reinvent the underlying infrastructure.
The challenge for Make Me A Comic was to make that message entertaining without allowing the comic to become a disguised product demonstration.
We needed a story in which the technology played an important role, but the characters, humour and narrative came first.
Developing the Superhero Concept Together
PubNub arrived with the foundations of a storyline already in mind. Rather than beginning with a blank page, we worked collaboratively with the client to expand those ideas into a complete comic book narrative.
The concept became How to Become a Superhero with PubNub!, a playful adventure built around an app development team navigating the familiar pressures of software development.
The story uses a superhero transformation to represent the difference between developers struggling with technical obstacles and developers who have the right tools to move forward.
We developed the narrative, pacing, dialogue and visual treatment together, transforming the client's initial direction into a fully illustrated comic with original characters, humour and an unfolding plot.
The superhero theme provided a natural way to exaggerate technical challenges. Development problems could become dramatic obstacles, while successful solutions could be represented through the visual language of comic-book powers.
Importantly, we wanted the humour to work on two levels. Developers would recognise the technical frustrations, while readers without a software background could still understand the characters' predicament.
The result was a story designed to entertain first and communicate the product's benefits through the narrative.
Bringing the Real-Time App Story to Life
The comic begins in San Francisco, where a team of developers is enjoying success with its application.
Not every development team has been so fortunate, however. Through a flashback, we discover that adding new features previously caused serious problems.
The team struggled with inadequate support, security and compliance requirements, limited flexibility, difficulties scaling the application and concerns about reliability.
As those challenges accumulated, development slowed, deadlines became harder to meet and the application began receiving negative reviews.
The situation becomes increasingly desperate when management demands a turnaround within six months.
The developers need a solution, but they worry that rebuilding their infrastructure or introducing real-time features themselves will take too much time.
Then somebody suggests PubNub.
The team decides to try the platform, and the comic's tone changes. Instead of struggling with infrastructure, the developers discover a way to introduce new functionality while concentrating on their application.
The story presents benefits including support, security, scalability and flexibility, turning technical advantages into a visual transformation.
The developers emerge as superheroes, representing their newfound ability to deliver a more engaging application experience.
It is an exaggerated comic-book version of a recognisable development challenge: teams want to build features their users love without spending unnecessary time maintaining complex real-time infrastructure.
Turning PubNub's Technology Into Superpowers
One of the most important creative decisions was how to represent PubNub's technology without overwhelming readers with technical explanations.
Rather than introducing APIs through diagrams or lengthy descriptions, the comic places their benefits within the characters' journey.
Real-time functionality becomes something the team can add to its application. Scalability is presented through the application's ability to grow. Reliability and security appear as obstacles the developers no longer have to confront alone.
The narrative also highlights speed and flexibility. With PubNub supporting the real-time infrastructure, the team can spend more time developing the features that distinguish its application.
This approach allowed the comic to communicate practical product advantages while maintaining the pace of a superhero adventure.
For developer marketing, that balance was particularly important. The aim was not to replace technical documentation or suggest that every development problem could be solved instantly.
Instead, the comic provided an approachable introduction to PubNub's platform, encouraging readers to explore the technology further if it was relevant to their work.
The illustrations gave an otherwise invisible infrastructure product a recognisable personality and a more memorable way to connect with prospective users.
Captain Scope Creep and the Race Against the Deadline
Just when the developers believe their troubles are over, the comic introduces another familiar problem: changing requirements.
The team has delivered its application ahead of schedule, and management is delighted. But success brings new expectations, including additional features such as geolocation and leaderboards.
This is where Captain Scope Creep enters the story.
Representing the familiar problem of expanding project requirements, the villain threatens to derail the team's progress and push the application beyond its deadline.
The developers initially panic. They have only recently completed the existing work, and now they are being asked to deliver even more.
But the superheroes have one important advantage: they have built their application using PubNub.
Rather than returning to months of infrastructure development, they can concentrate on extending the application.
Captain Scope Creep is defeated, the team delivers its work, and the fictional story concludes with an award recognising the developers' achievements.
The villain provided an especially effective storytelling device because scope creep is something software teams understand immediately. It transformed a common workplace frustration into a memorable comic-book confrontation.
It also gave the narrative a proper ending, rather than stopping once the product's features had been explained.
The Finished Superhero Comic and Client Response
The finished result was a 12-page custom superhero comic, combining PubNub's original concept with collaborative story development, original character artwork and a complete narrative.
The comic introduced the platform through an entertaining story about developers, their challenges and the pressure to deliver applications that meet changing expectations.
For Make Me A Comic, the project involved more than illustrating a supplied script. We worked closely with PubNub to develop the initial storyline, strengthen the narrative and create a finished comic that balanced humour, technical accuracy and brand communication.
The project demonstrates how custom comics for business can offer technology companies a different way to engage audiences who may be resistant to conventional marketing.
Rather than asking developers to read a sales brochure, PubNub created something that spoke to an existing interest in superheroes and comic-book storytelling.
The company's feedback was positive. Michelle Krasniak, Director of Content Marketing, praised the creative service, speed and quality of the finished work, and expressed an interest in producing another comic.
No specific conversion figures or measurable campaign results have been attributed to the project. Its value as a case study lies in the creative challenge, collaborative process and finished work.
In Their Words
We had been searching for creative and fun ways to explain our service and how it came about. Make Me A Comic met all our expectations, they are fast and the service is exceptional. We look forward to creating another.
