One thing we've learned after creating thousands of comics is that the strongest comic ideas are not always the biggest - they are the ones with the clearest hook. A great comic idea gives people something to latch onto straight away: a compelling character, an impossible choice, an unusual world, a sharp emotional conflict, or a premise that instantly makes you want to know what happens next.
Comic fans know this better than anyone. People do not spend years debating characters, rivalries, alternate timelines, betrayals, endings, motivations and power scales just because something looked cool on the page. They do it because the best comics create characters and storylines that stay in your head. The ideas feel alive. They spark discussion. They make people choose sides. They make people imagine what happens next.
Because the winning entry becomes a 1-page, 10-panel comic strip, the most effective submissions are usually the most focused. That does not mean small or lightweight. It means centred around one strong idea. A morally conflicted hero. A villain who might actually be right. A cursed object with a terrible cost. A party of adventurers with one fatal weakness. We're looking for comic ideas with real storytelling energy - ideas that are funny, dramatic, emotional, strange, visually striking, character-led or rich with genre potential. Your story could come from everyday life, fantasy, science fiction, horror, romance, mythology, tabletop-style party dynamics, superhero lore or something completely original. What matters is that it feels like it has something worth exploring. Here are a few ways to think about it:
Some of the best comics begin with one unforgettable character. Not just someone with powers or a cool costume, but someone with contradiction, tension and personality. A knight who is fearless in battle but terrified of intimacy. A necromancer who keeps resurrecting the wrong people. A detective who can read minds but cannot stand what people really think of him. A chosen one who no longer wants the job.
Readers obsess over characters when they feel layered, specific and difficult to forget. If your idea starts with a character people would argue about, root for, fear, quote or fall in love with, you're onto something strong.
Some of the most enduring comic ideas come from worlds with rules, stakes and history. That does not mean you need to submit an encyclopaedia of lore. It means you should focus on one entry point into that world: one power with an unexpected limitation, one ancient rivalry, one mission that could fracture the team, one prophecy no one agrees how to interpret, or one villain whose motives are disturbingly understandable.
Comic fans love stories that invite debate. Who was right? Who crossed the line? Which version of the character was strongest? Was the ending inevitable? If your idea feels like it could spark that kind of conversation, it already has life in it.
Humour absolutely belongs here too, but the strongest funny comics usually have more going on than a random gag. From there, our team will shape it into a complete 1-page, 10-panel story. Our writers will help structure the narrative, our illustrators will bring the characters and world to life, and together we'll create a finished comic that feels polished, distinctive and worth getting excited about.
Your finished comic will be professionally illustrated, printed at 12 × 18 inches, and created to feel like a genuine piece of comic art you can keep, frame or proudly display. You'll also receive a high-resolution digital copy together with a professionally printed version of your comic. If you're happy for us to do so, we'll also feature your comic on our website and social media so other comic fans can enjoy it too.

Your original comic idea remains yours. If your entry is selected, you will also own the rights to the finished comic artwork created from it. By entering the competition, you simply give us permission to develop and illustrate your submission if it is chosen as the monthly winner.
If your idea is not selected, you are welcome to enter again in a future month. You can submit a brand-new comic idea or re-enter the same one if you still believe in it. Every month is a new opportunity, and we read every submission with fresh eyes.

Every submission is read by Aura Gold, the curator and Art Director of Make Me A Comic. We're not looking for professional writers or artists - we're looking for originality, imagination and ideas that we'd genuinely enjoy turning into a comic. There isn't a points system or public vote. We simply choose the submission that excites us the most each month.
